A Graduation Party Fit For the Gods

It's the end of the school year and graduates need to be celebrated, right? So why not spoil them with something over the top? Since many of them feel so invincible after earning their degrees or diplomas, why not treat them like the Gods and Goddesses they think they are, and honor them with a royal affair?

Wilton Cookie Sheet

You know the Parthenon in Greece was built to do just that, honor the Gods, so it makes for the perfect party backdrop. Hence, give your favorite grad the gift of a Pantheon Toga Party! It's easy if you follow my simple formula for throwing fun and memorable gatherings people will remember for a lifetime.

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Element #1 - Theme, Mood & Color: Carry Them Out in Everything You Do

When I talk about MOOD, I'm referring to the temporary state of mind, emotion or feeling I want to put my guests in - the experience I want to create for them. So that you get the idea and choose the best mood for your Pantheon Toga Graduation Party, here are some examples.

You can create a mood of "rest and relaxation" with gentle music, low lighting, candlelight and pale colors. Use flowing white fabrics and comfortable cushions and pillows for lounging. For fun, bring in a masseuse to do ten-minute neck messages for each of your guests, and laden your tables with a feast of fresh fruits and light, heavenly foods.

On the other hand, you can create an enlivened mood of "indulgence" using sensual and danceable music, colorful lighting and royal vivid colors. Bring in richer, more decadent foods. You can even promote hedonism by having your guests feed each other. Starting to see the difference?

Or, if an "Animal House" atmosphere is more your style, then keep your décor casual, more "college budget looking." Keep the lights on, play your favorite modern music, serve lots of finger foods, chips and munchies, and have a couple of kegs of beer on hand.

You have the power to create any mood you wish for your party. So what will it be -- an air of relaxation, indulgence, or carefree fun?

Element #2 - Invitations: Make Them Inviting

For your Pantheon Toga Party use a laurel headband for the base of your invitation. Simply attach a gold metallic card listing all the party specifics using a gold stretchy cord to adhere it to the laurel.

When creating your wording, lead in with something like, "It's time for (insert your graduate's name) to rest on his (or her) laurels! Join us as we honor him (or her) at his (or her) Pantheon Toga Graduation Party!" or "Calling all graduating Gods and Goddesses, you are cordially invited to a Pantheon Toga Party!" And then maybe you list your party details - date, time, and place - on the backside of the card.

Another really fun element to add to your toga party is to assign your guests God and Goddess names. These names can either be real or funny, made-up names like "Cornucopia" Goddess of Maze, or "Sportacus" God of Athletics, or "Porsche" the Goddess of Transportation. Whichever way you go, be sure to include this in your invitation so that people can "dress" the part if they want to.

Which reminds me...you may want to mention something on the invite about this being a costume party and encourage guests to wear their laurels...a little gift to get the party started.

Element #3 - Decor & Ambiance: Remember Set and Setting Are Everything

Creating a backdrop for your Pantheon Toga Party may seem daunting, but it really isn't.

First, look around your home for everything you can find that is gold, white and/or Roman or Grecian-like. Things like columns and pillars, busts, statues, pedestals, white fabrics, sheets, sheers, curtains, ivy vines and plants, candles and candle holders, gold marbles and pebbles, clear glass containers and vases, gold sparkling flora, even tassels and ribbon. Walk room to room; pulling items and collect them all on your dining room table. When in doubt, spray it gold! It's a great motto for this party. Oh, and don't forget to raid your holiday decorations because you never know what you might find that's gold and sparkly.

Then, go online and order any missing pieces. Include things like Roman shields, and armor and be sure to pick up a gross of blue balloons with white clouds imprinted on them, which when filled with helium and allowed to float to the ceiling will represent the sky.

I would recommend renting a few larger columns from a party rental company to place around the parameter of the room to create an authentic feeling. You can purchase columns instead of renting. They're usually made of corrugated paper and come in a variety of sizes, but I feel the heavier, rented ones are safer and will better withstand the wear and tear of live guests.

A major key to decorating for this party is to make your room as light-colored as possible. To do this simply remove any dark furniture pieces and add white fabric everywhere you can. You may want to cover your couch to lighten it up a bit and inexpensive white pillowcases are a great way to cover your throw pillows. I even used tension rods to put up temporary white curtains without hurting my door openings.

Finally, take all your gold and white, Grecian/Roman items that you scavenged from around your home and place them about your party rooms, and you're done. A party backdrop fit for the Graduating Pantheon of Gods!

Element #4 - Food & Beverage: Never Stress About Food and Drinks

With everyone dressed in togas and your house fashioned after the Pantheon it seems only fitting that the Gods and Goddesses drink from a special cup. I love the idea of drinking from a bejeweled "Golden Challis." I think it's the perfect complement to the theme. You can usually order these by the dozen online. Then, name your featured beverage, whatever it is, "Nectar of the Gods." Fun eh?

Next, because this is such a special moment in your graduate's life, have white cocktail napkins personalized with his or her name and "Pantheon Graduation Toga Party" and the date imprinted in gold. You'll be creating a fancy and grown-up keepsake that it sure to delight him or her.

Finally, what graduation would be complete without a cake to celebrate? Here is a very clever idea. If you're a baker, simply make three sheet cakes that are different sizes. If you're like me, and would rather spend your time decorating or choosing a costume than bake, order three cakes from the bakery.

Then use a fun product I found from Wilton---Fillable Pillar Sets. They come in 4-inch and 6-inch heights and can be filled with whatever you like. I chose ribbon to match my décor, but you can use marbles, candy, and glitter, anything you can dream up. When combined with Wilton's square separator plates, you can easily create a customized graduation cake that's perfect as an offering to your Pantheon of Gods, at a fraction of the price.

Element #5 - Activities: Engage Your Guests in Something

I have two planned group activities for your Pantheon Toga Graduation Party to tell you about. The first is a photo op. In your decorating, create the perfect location for a group photo. Once all your guests arrive, take a group shot of everyone in costume while it's early and everyone is looking like the Gods and Goddess they are. You could also take individual shots with the Graduate and each of his or her guests to vary this idea. This photo is important because it will be part of your party favor that I'll finish telling you about in just a bit. But most importantly, this is a memorable moment in your graduate's life and you don't want to miss it!

The second activity is meant to provide a heartfelt moment to the evening. I call this a "Pocket Full of Wishes." I purchased a set of palm-sized stars online with inspirational words carved on them, and placed them in a golden-colored drawstring bag. Each guest, or couple, however you want to set it up, will take a star from the bag and use the word they pulled as the basis or starting point for their wish (or toast) to your graduate. The words on the stars I ordered are "achieve," "dream," "believe," "hope," "imagine," and "create," all encouraging words that will make for great congratulatory speeches.

When each guest has finished their wish, the stone simply goes back in the bag and the bag is passed to the next guest. Once all guests have gone, the bag is given to the graduate as a reminder of his or her lifelong wishes from all his or her favorite people. You may want to video the wishes, or have someone write them down to give to the graduate as an additional keepsake.

Element #6 - Special Touches: Set Your Party Apart; Give Them Something From Your Heart

In addition to the heartfelt Pocket Full of Wishes activity, you can also find "photo wall hangers" online easy enough that will provide added sentiment as well. If possible, try to find one that coordinates with your inspirational theme, because not only will it make for a lovely keepsake for the guest of honor, but it will also provide lots of giggles for your guests when it is filled with childhood photos.

Lastly, for a fun party favor you can make that won't cost you an arm and a leg, pick up wood frames for each of your guests. You'll also need some gold leaf paint and a sponge applicator brush. I like to work with this type of paint because it goes on so smooth and has a very unique look to it. It also dries pretty quickly. Paint each frame gold and allow it to dry. Then, simply toss the sponge applicator brush for easy clean up.

While you're out, you'll also want to choose some foam stamps that look Grecian or Roman, perhaps something with a laurel leaf, and pick up a few inspirational word stamps as well. Choose two colors of green craft paint that complement each other and you're set. Foam stamp the leaves in one color on the gold frame, and the inspirational words in another, and you've just crafted the perfect souvenir for that group photo you took earlier!

What's nice about this Pantheon Toga Graduation Party is that you can adjust it for any type of graduation -- high school, college, grad school, even a vocational degree. It's really ageless...just like the Gods and Goddesses. If you think about it, you can also adapt it for a birthday party, especially for the happy Roman or Gladiator in your life. Good party themes for men are hard to come by, but I think this one deserves a gold medal.

I'm Shelby Phillips, thanks for coming to my party!

60th Birthday Cake Ideas That You Will Love

So someone's turning 60! Wouldn't that be reason enough to celebrate? You think of a theme, plan the menu, and try to find the best birthday cake for him or her. More often than not, the problem lies in finding cake designs, since there are fewer cake ideas as a person gets older. Here are some 60th birthday cake ideas that you can choose from.

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Instead of the usual 1 big cake, why not make two or three smaller ones of different sizes, and then stack them up according to size. You can make a two-tiered round cake and decorate it with icing figures of her favorite flowers. Or you can use white fondant icing and place small colored icing fruits around it. You can also use fresh flowers or glazed fruits to decorate the cake. Just be sure to advise guests if the decorations are inedible.

Wilton Cookie Sheet

You can also bake two rectangular or square cakes of different sizes. Cover them with fondant icing so they would look like wrapped gifts, complete with ribbons and wrapping paper. With white icing, you can make a small name card at a corner and write "Happy Birthday" on it to make it look like a real present. Place the smaller cake on top of the other, at any angle, for a more interesting effect.

For him, you can create a cake with champagne bottle design. Some white icing can be placed on the bottle opening to simulate foam. You can also find designs from his interests. A golf lover would like a birthday cake with golf clubs as design. If he is fond of collecting vintage cars, a cake in the shape of a vintage car would be interesting.

Remember that the birthday cake design must also depend on the personality of the celebrant. For a person who commands respect and authority, his birthday cake must also reflect the same. Instead of the usual colorful icing, create a simple yet elegant birthday cake by decorating it with gold or silver icing in classic designs.

There are many 60th birthday cake ideas that you can think of. All you need is a little patience, and lots of imagination. What matters is that you are able to make someone's birthday really special and memorable. As he approaches the golden years of his life, be thankful of every year that he gets to spend with you. So by the time that someone in your family turns 60, finding the design and throwing in a party would be a piece of cake.

Amazing Army Birthday Parties - All-American Ideas For Decorations and Party Food!

Ideas for Army birthday parties, including decorations and party food, to help you create the great adventure. Ten-hut! Get ready to create some muddy good fun!

Wilton Cookie Sheet

ARMY PARTY DECORATIONS - Your party colors should consist of various shades of Army green, along with red, white, and blue to represent the American flag. However, you will want to be careful how you use your party colors to ensure your decor doesn't get too busy or look confusing.

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Party Table - For example, emphasis red, white, and blue for your mess hall table with the use of a tablecloth, paper cups, plates, and silverware in those colors. To tie the Army greens into your party, create a centerpiece in those colors and attach a bouquet of balloons.

Camo The Party Room - Start by turning your main party room into everything camouflage, no more white walls or ceiling. Cover up your ceiling by hanging green netting from it. Create camo "wallpaper" by gluing pieces of black, brown, green, and tan butcher paper together. Then affix your "wallpaper" to your walls.

Mess Hall - For a really fun idea, pitch a large green tent to serve as the mess hall and serve up your Army grub to all your brave soldiers.

Sick Bay - You could also set-up a small tent to serve as your first-aid center.

Army Soldiers - Scatter a few life-size cardboard soldiers around your party area to make it look like an army base. In the alternative, you could have some of the parents or older siblings dress up in Army camos and stand guard over the premises. The country's flag should be visible, as should other army related paraphernalia.

ARMY PARTY FOOD IDEAS - After a long, hard day at battle, send your soldiers to the mess tent and serve up some Army-inspired foods. Try to serve your food up so that it looks like it is served in army type utensils.

Military Munchies - Turn military helmets upside down, line them with camouflage fabric, and fill with your favorite munchies. Things like chips, cookies, nuts, and crackers, all work very well.

Cannonballs - Cook up your favorite meatball recipe in a marinara sauce. Create Army toothpicks by affixing two identical Army stickers together with a toothpick in between. Put a toothpick in each of your cannonballs for easy snacking.

Birthday Rations - MRE's - Give your soldiers real MRE Army food, which stands for Meals Ready To Eat. You can obtain these from an Army surplus store.

Army Cookies - Make your favorite sugar cookie recipe and cut out cookies in the shape of tanks, trucks, jets, etc. Decorate with various colored green, brown, and black frostings along with edible decorations to create the vehicle details.

Camouflage Cake - Bake a sheet cake and frost it white. Cover the cake with a camouflage pattern by spraying the cake black, brown, and green using Wilton's Color Mist food color spray. Create an Army scene by topping it off with plastic Army men, tanks, tents, and trucks.

Swamp Water Punch - Make lemonade and add some green food coloring. For added fun, make ice cubes with "bugs" (raisins) inside of each cube.

These ideas for Army birthday parties will help get you started in creating an Army adventure for your special "soldier."

The Wedding Cake - Featured Attraction!

As you shop around for wedding cake ideas, keep in mind that this special cake will take center stage (along with the bride and groom) at the wedding reception. Remember, the wedding cake is more than a beautiful treat to offer guests.

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Your wedding cake, whether it be a lovely sheet cake or a five tiered extravagance, will be the first sight that catches the guests' attention as they enter the room. It will have its own table, decorated to set the stage for this special confection and the most traditional of all wedding reception traditions, the cake cutting ceremony.

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Just think, the first ceremony that the couple takes part in as now married husband and wife, is centered around the wedding cake! That special moment when the bride and groom slice that first piece of their wedding cake and then feed each other the first bite is often the most photographed moment at the reception.

Wedding Cake Choices

Your mother's wedding cake was probably a traditional white, stacked or tiered confection covered with buttercream and icing flowers. My, how times have changed! Have you noticed the rich variety of wedding cakes?

If you are a cake decorator like me, you get to experience this variety in wedding cakes first hand, but if you are choosing a cake for your own wedding, you have some narrowing down to do. You can have your cake and eat it to - but you can have only one wedding cake!

Your cake can be created to compliment the wedding's colors, the bridesmaid's dresses, the bridal gown, or if the wedding has a theme (such as beach, Cinderella, Western, vintage, snowflake, etc.), the wedding cake may be designed to compliment that.

While considering all of this, keep in mind that the wedding cake, also called the bride's cake, presents a powerful symbol of the bride's style and personal taste, just as the groom's cake is designed with his interests in mind. However, a growing tradition is for bride and groom's common interests to be reflected in the wedding cake.

Choosing a Wedding Cake Designer

Choosing the professional who will bake, assemble and decorate your wedding cake is as important as choosing the wedding cake design. If a wedding planner is employed, this person will take care of this detail.

If you're taking care of this, keep in mind that wedding cakes are often ordered at least six months in advance. In selecting a wedding cake designer, don't be afraid to ask to see a portfolio.

You want a designer who will be able to create a cake that is right for you, who is able to help you plan the wedding cake of your dreams. And let's not forget about taste. Ask for a sample of the flavor with the filling and icing you want. Allow time to shop around.

Baking your own Wedding Cake

Increasingly more couples are making their own wedding cakes! Baking your own wedding cake can be a fun and cost-cutting alternative, but don't go it alone. A good, step-by-step video guide to cake decorating and tier cake assembly will be very helpful, as will some good cake making how-to's.

Here's a cake tip to get you started: Use fresh ingredients, and choose natural over artificial. For example the freshest of eggs and real butter (instead of margarine) does make a difference!

And if you are looking for a hard-to-find ingredient, such as clear vanilla flavoring, or a special colorant, you can purchase these online from cake decorating suppliers such as Wilton.

Don't be shy about enlisting family and friends. Invite them over for refreshments and video lessons! Do some trial runs and have fun!

Easy, Homemade Birthday Cakes For Kids - You Can Do it Too!

Have you ever dreamed of making the perfect cake for your kid's birthday? I remember as a child how thrilled I always was with my Mom's wonderful birthday cake creations and I vowed to make my own kids' cakes once I had my own family. I loved the idea of making a really personalized, homemade cake rather than ordering the traditional sheet cake from our local grocery store. I was nervous starting out but soon realized that with a little patience and practice anyone can do this!

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Here are some helpful hints that will allow even the busiest moms to bake the perfect birthday cake for their child:

Wilton Cookie Sheet

1.) Don't make your cake from scratch. You can save plenty of time by buying the boxed cake mixes and they often taste just as good as a cake made from scratch. In fact, at my most recent kid birthday party I was even asked for my cake recipe because it was so yummy!

2.) Start by using a shaped character pan. They generally have very detailed and easy-to-follow directions. You can also buy them fairly cheaply (check out eBay for affordable used and retired pans).

3.) Use pre-made decorator or royal icing. I like Wilton's decorator icing since it tastes good and is great for piping since it holds its shape well and dries fairly hard.

4.) Use pre-made and pre-colored fondant. My favorite is Satin Ice since it has a nice vanilla flavor; unlike some other pre-made fondants, and you can get it in a number of different colors. You can also flavor fondant with candy flavoring.

5.) Fun cake toppers can really make a cake sparkle. If you're making a more traditional rectangular or circular cake, you can dress it up with fun cake toppers. This is an easy and affordable way to make a theme cake.

Finally, don't be afraid to try new things!

Above all, have fun and enjoy the look of delight and pride on your child's face when they see their special cake and tell their friends that their Mommy made it just for them!

Make Your Kid's Birthday Cake to Match Any Party Theme!

Your child has just informed you that they would like an Indiana Jones party for their next birthday - or maybe it's Cinderella or WALL-E. Did you know that you can easily create a themed, homemade cake for your little one without spending a fortune at your local bakery? Below are the two best ways for you to jump right in!

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Use a Cake Topper
You can buy such wonderful cake toppers these days for almost any party theme. The great thing about using a cake topper is that your cake itself can be just a simple rectangle, square or circle. Frost the cake with some colored frosting and use the cake topper as the decoration. You can perhaps add some sprinkles or edible glitter as well to really make your cake sparkle. If you're not comfortable piping a border around your cake, use a colorful ribbon wrapped around it instead.

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Use a Character Cake Pan
You can buy cake pans in almost every shape imaginable. From sports balls to castles and everything in between! Many of your child's favorite characters are also available as cake pans. You can buy new cake pans from any store that sells Wilton products but you should also check out eBay and Amazon.com for great deals on used pans as well as retired pans that are harder to find. Each pan comes with detailed instructions and the decorating requires you to simply outline the shape and then fill in the spaces with little stars (the star tip is one of the easiest to use). If you want to create a larger cake then you can bake a large sheet cake as a background and place the character cake on top of it.

Above all, have fun and remember that practice makes perfect!

Party Panache - How to Budget Your Kid's Birthday Bash With Style

Whatever the budget for your kid's birthday party, you can create a birthday bash with panache. It's creativity that makes an event memorable. To that happy ending, here are some ideas to get the party started:

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Hand deliver the invitations. Present a mini "glass" slipper for a princess party, or a small dinosaur figurine for a Jurassic party, then direct parents to check their e-mail for the Evite. This will make a big impact on your kid's party, and probably cost you a lot less than paper invitations with postage.

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Invite fewer guests. No one says you have to invite all 22 kids from school. Besides, having just a handful of kids at the party is more manageable and makes your guests feel privileged for attending. Just be sure to handle invitations discreetly.

Double the fun. Divvy up the costs of entertainment and food by combining a party with another kid. Even if you hold separate parties when it comes to the food and drink, you could trim expenses on the location, decoration, bounce house, or talent by partnering with someone you know.

Set the scene at home. Your toy chest likely holds heaps of decor in your selected party theme. So get out the horse figurines for a pony party. Create a carnival atmosphere by hanging sheets on a line and floating rubber duckies in the kiddie pool. Run a DVD on continual play (Nemo's virtual aquarium works great for an under-the-sea theme party). Insert a glass with flowers into a cowboy boot for an instant vase. Your creativity will find new uses for old things.

Turn your guests into the decorations. Have kids bring their own cuddly bear for a teddy bear tea party. Give the young buckaroos a mustache you draw with an eye liner and outfit them with a bandanna or cowboy hat for a Western theme. Provide home-made fairy wings, and rainbow face painting for a fairyland theme party. Or invite guests to dress the part of a knight, princess or pirate.

Skip the helium balloons. Standard balloons are just as festive when attached to chairs, walls or the floor. For an underwater birthday theme, try affixing blue and green balloons to the floor to create an ocean effect. Instead of balloons, buy some inflatable toys on eBay -- they double as decorations and favors. You'll find a selection of affordable 15-inch inflatables from horses, cows, and monkeys to pink poodles, swords, magic wands and more on eBay. Or try a festive life-size monkey for a luau party, or red dragon for a knights and princess party: also found on eBay.

Do without. Sure, you can borrow tables and chairs, but why not have fun with your theme and do without them? Set up bales of hay for a horse theme party. Sit on towels for a pool party. Create a faux campfire for a cowboy theme party. Or just put picnic cloths on the lawn for your guests. You can do without some utensils too, if your food is portable. Ice cream cone cupcakes, for example, make a substantial impact on your budget when compared to a store bought cake. Instead of paper cupcake cups, just pour cake batter into colorful ice-cream cones and bake. You save on plates, forks and ice cream.

Make food and drink memorable. Try themed shaped cookie cutters for sandwiches. Set up the toy farm and create a "paddock" for the cupcakes at your barnyard party. Turn a submarine sandwich into a pirate ship with sails for the little scallywags. Use colored sugars like margarita salt for your princess party drinks (just wedge a lemon around the glass, then dip with blue or purple sugars and pour pink lemonade for an ethereal look that kids won't soon forget). Decorate water bottles with stickers in your party theme. You'll find a great selection of affordable stickers in on eBay. For a pink pirate party, we chose a pink colored Vitamin water and decorated the bottles with pirate stickers.

Create your own themed favors and treats. Use your computer and printer to make new labels for candy. Send kids home with a doggie dish of dog-bone shaped gingerbread cookies. Wilton makes several great candy molds to make lollypops or chocolate treats. You can also use them to mold crayons or soaps to match your theme.

Hire student performers or helpers. The hired help doesn't need to have artistic talent - just supply some tattoos you find on eBay and they can become instant "face painters. Helpers can also organize games and activities, serve the cake, help with the presents, or read a theme related book so you can enjoy your party.

Think ahead. Find candy on sale for the pinata after Valentine's Day, Halloween, or Christmas. Purchase costumes after Halloween, but in advance of your party. Stock up on drinks and chips when they're on sale to save money.

You can create the perfect party in your mind and deliver memorable results for your child as you save money. Be sure to include your child in as much of the pre-party planning as possible -- you may be surprised at the wonderful party ideas that may surface as a result.

Cake Decorating With Fondant - It's Sweet!

TV Shows like Cake Boss and The Little Chocolatiers have created a new era of incredible custom cakes to complete any major party or event. Cake decorating with fondant and other techniques allow your imagination to flow free and design seemingly impossible works of art, transforming them into delicious pieces of food. One may spend hundreds, or even thousands of dollars on these one of a kind creations, but for those with limited budgets there are other options that can be explored. Many craft places, such as Michael's, offer cake-decorating classes that can teach you the basics of cake decorating with fondant.

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Fondant can be made from scratch or bought in big rolls from places like Wal-Mart, Target, or various craft stores that carry other baking supplies. There are so many premade edible touches that you can really make your cakes come to life with chocolate or candied people, accessories, flowers and decor. As your skill increases you can enjoy making your own types of decorations to truly make sure your cakes are one of a kind.

Wilton Cookie Sheet

There are a variety of tips that can be used to create different looks with icing. There are literally hundreds of tips that allow you to give custom levels of softness and detailing on top of your fondant.

While fondant can create stunning cakes, the cake will not taste good if you do not remember to make a good quality cake underneath, with layers of frosting. Often harder fondant may be peeled off instead of eaten. Combining interesting flavors in addition to imaginative themes is the key.

Using fondant may be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. You may want to use a harder cake, such as pound cake on one of your first attempts. This will keep the cake from crumbling as you get used to working with fondant. You roll it out into a large sheet and can cover a cake or cut out individual decorations to be peeled and placed onto the cake. After covering the cake with smoothly rolled out fondant it gives a seamless, smooth exterior that is sure to please even the toughest critic.

Don't be afraid to try this latest craze in party decorating. The cake is now not only the food at the party; it's the main centerpiece! Your guests will be impressed with your amazing creativity and originality. Find a local baker that specializes in these amazing pieces of art, or start experimenting on your own. Either way, cake decorating with fondant is the trend that has party-goers everywhere squealing with delight!

Edible Printouts For Your Cakes

Just how do those bakeries do the birthday cake printouts?

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Can I do this on my inkjet printer at home?

Wilton Cookie Sheet

I'll answer those questions for you in this article.

Printing on a sheet to overlay your birthday cake might seem like something you could not do at home.

If you don't want to eat that printout, it is something you can accomplish with your printer, existing ink and some tracing paper. If you do want to eat that printout, it is another story entirely.

To do a birthday cake printout that you can eat you are going to need some specialized equipment and paper.

A compatible printer Edible Ink Cartridges Edible Paper Edible Pens
Compatible Printer

You don't have to buy a new printer to print edible birthday cake printouts. It's possible to convert an old printer that has been used for regular printing jobs as a printer for edible ink. All that you need to do is to clean the printer, especially the printer head, thoroughly to remove all traces of the regular ink that was once used with it.

There are two brands of printers out on the market that have readily available edible ink cartridges for birthday cake printouts. Epson and Canon.

The Epson printers that are currently supported are:

WORKFORCE 500, WORKFORCE 600, NX100, NX200, NX300, NX400, CX5000, CX6000, CX7000F, CX7400, CX8400, CX9400F, and Stylus 1400.

Stylus Models: 1400, C87, C87+, C88 and C88+

The Canon printers that currently allow you to do birthday cake printouts are:

ALL-in-One Systems: MP510, MP520, MX700, MP500, MP800, MP810, MP830, MX850

Printers: IP3300, IP3500, IP6600D and IP6700D. There are various discontinued Canon printers out there in the Pixima line that can be used as well but I can't vouch for them.

Edible Ink Cartridges

Your printer is the first step in making birthday cake printouts. The second thing you're going to need is the specialty ink used to print your pictures. Not just any old ink will do. There are specialized FDA approved inks for use on your cake's edible paper.

These inks are not just any old ink. A great deal of care, cleanliness and formulation goes into the making of edible inks. Plain old food coloring injected in your old inject cartridge won't work, not to mention be safe!

Each printer has a specific requirement for the cartridges needed. Canon printers can get by with a black cartridge and a color cartridge. This might be fine if you are doing some very basic, low volume printing but remember the single color cartridges will not give you as much print output as individual tanks will.

Something else to consider is just how many prints are you going to make? Is this going to blossom into a little side business or do you plan to just print out one or two for your son's birthday?

If it is the former, by all means, get yourself a printer, ink and paper and go for it. If you just want to print out one sheet and put it on a cake, you might want to consider contacting one of the myriad of companies out there that do birthday cake printouts and have them do it for you.

The prices might seem high for a single printout but consider what it would cost to buy the ink cartridges ( or so) and clean your printer and buy the edible paper.

Edible Paper

The next item required for making a birthday cake printout is edible paper. While edible paper is related to the paper you use everyday at work and home there is a key difference. The ingredients. Edible paper is made from rice or potato starch.

Nearly all of the papers out there are Kosher to boot!

Depending on the brand and composition, the paper can be somewhat brittle so you have to be a little more careful handling it than you would with regular paper.

Most of these papers are designed only to melt in water (i.e. your mouth) and not on the cake. You can be assured of a very nice looking product if you pick a quality edible paper for your birthday cake printout.

Edible Ink Pens

Maybe you don't want to print on your cake but you would like to write on some of the edible paper with an edible color marker. Wilton, the everything about cakes company makes these and they are wonderful.

Let your kids draw on the edible paper and create their own decorations without all of the mess that would happen if you gave them a pastry bag and let them go to town on the cake.

OHIO Buckeyes Chocolate and Peanut Butter Candy Recipe

Maybe you are an Ohio State fan or just love peanut butter & chocolate, here is a recipe for you!

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Before we start, what exactly is a buckeye anyways?? A buckeye is a tree, the state tree of Ohio. It became a name used to identify the pioneers on the Ohio frontier. Of course it later became the name for any Ohio State University sports team. Here is what a buckeye tree looks like!

Wilton Cookie Sheet

Here is what the fruit of the tree looks like:

Now onto the candy, you will see that the candy resembles the fruit of the Buckeye Tree. The fruit is poisonous to humans but often eaten by squirrels. So... be sure NOT to eat the real fruit of a buckeye tree!

WHAT YOU NEED

1 cup (9 ounces) creamy peanut butter1/4 cup butter at room temperature1 teaspoon vanilla1+1/2 cup confectioner's sugar1/2 cup all purpose flour1 cup (8 ounces) chocolate chips, melted**
HERE'S WHAT YOU DOLine 2 cookie sheets with waxed paper. Beat peanut butter, butter & vanilla in a medium sized bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Gradually beat in confectioner's sugar and flour until well blended. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls into 1" balls. Arrange on prepared cookie sheets and refrigerate for one hour or until firm. Spear one ball at a time with a wooden toothpick and dip into melted chocolate to cover about two thirds of ball.Arrange chocolate side down on prepared cookie sheets. Smooth over the toothpick hole so that they are not visible. refrigerate about 15 minutes or until chocolate is set. Store tightly covered in refrigerator for up to 2 months. Makes about 60 pieces. ** I have substituted candy chocolate melting wafers for the chocolate chips before. Wilton makes some or you can buy them at your local craft store.

Put into a vintage or new candy tin or on a pretty plate & you have a great gift. Everyone loves these! Even if they are not an Ohio State fan!

Building a Gingerbread House

Gingerbread Houses are beautiful to look at and good enough to eat. The baking, building and decorating not only provides good family fun and encourages togetherness, but lets you use your imagination and creativity. A gingerbread House can be as simple or elaborate as you wish. The simplest house can be dressed up to look elegant and a dignified Victorian Mansion can be simply decorated.

The making of Gingerbread goes back many centuries to medieval England, but the baking, building and decorating of Gingerbread Houses for Christmas can be traced back to Germany. Fortunately the tradition has spread throughout much of the world. The early English colonists in New England and the German settlers in Pennsylvania brought their family recipes with them and continued the tradition in the New World. Even though the Gingerbread house is usually decorated for Christmas, with Christmas candies, they can also be decorated for other holidays such as Chanukah. For a Chanukah house, use blue and white candies (M & M's are sold in custom colors at Party City or on-line. White chocolate coated pretzels and gold wrapped chocolate coins for a roof can also be used.

If you have never built a Gingerbread House it would be good to take a class to make your first one or purchase a kit that contains all the house parts and decorations. Making your own is by far the superior way to go, however not everyone has the time and it does take a little bit of instruction to make it work.

When you do decide to bake and build your own house, be sure to allow plenty of time to avoid mishaps and frustration. A good rule to follow would be to bake the house parts one day, and then construct it and decorate the next day. Even better would be to decorate it on a third day, giving the house construction plenty of time to dry before adding the weight of the decorations.

Equipment that you will need to bake a house is of course mixing equipment, flat cookie sheets, a rolling pin, a pizza cutter and a small knife along with cookie cutters if you want people or animals around your house. You can design your own house or find patterns on-line. Wilton even makes a set of cutters to make a small house with. You will find that there are several recipes available for making Gingerbread Houses but the best and strongest are the ones in which the liquid ingredients are heated before being mixed with the flour mixture.

It is best to roll the dough out directly on a baking sheet and then cut the pieces as closely together as possible so they do not expand during baking. You want to bake them long enough so that the dough is completely baked through, but not so long that the pieces will burn. Usually 15 minutes at 350 degrees will do it. When your Gingerbread House pieces come out of the oven, loosen them from the pan, but do not remove them until they have completely cooled. Also, if there are doors and windows to be cut, this needs to be done while the pieces are still warm and soft. Once they have cooled sufficiently, transfer them to a cooling rack and allow to cool completely before constructing the house.

The frosting that is used to build and decorate a Gingerbread House is Royal Frosting which is made from Egg Whites and Powdered Sugar or Meringue Powder (dried egg whites), Powdered Sugar and Water. The frosting is ideally made with an electric mixer and is beaten until the frosting is stiff enough to hold up the pieces of the house. Ideally, when you lift up the blades of the beater, the frosting will not run off, but rather will just sit there on the beater blades.

Be sure to build your house on a sturdy board, such as a carving board or a piece of scrap plywood, large enough to hold the house and strong enough to hold the weight. A good size for the board would be 18 x 24, but of course this will also depend on the size of the house.

All in all, building a Gingerbread House can be great family fun; you should not worry about how beautiful the house will be but think about how much fun you and your children will have together on this project. An added benefit is that you are creating a tradition that be recreated every year and also building memories for you and your children. Enjoy this moment in time! Lovely Bridal Shower Decorations for Your Big Party

Many brides dream of a fabulous bridal shower, surrounded by their dearest female friends and relatives. The shower is often an opportunity to get to know your mother-in-law to be, as well as her dearest friends and relatives. With all this at stake, you will want just the right decorations to make this a memorable event.

Themes

Wilton Cookie Sheet

One of the easiest ways to decorate for a bridal shower is to choose a theme. If it's a kitchen shower, add wooden spoons to your centerpieces. Get a retro rolling pin that doubles as a recipe card holder. Place one at each place setting and ask each guest to bring a recipe for the bride. For favors, give each guest a set of heart-shaped measuring spoons. And to decorate your gift for the bride, use a set of cookie cutters in the shape of hearts, wedding bells and a wedding cake. If your theme is "shower," decorate with galvanized watering cans filled with flowers on each table. Hang a real umbrella over the bride's chair and sprinkle the table tops with clear acrylic raindrops.

Favors

The favors, or gifts you give the guests at the bridal shower, range from lovely little trinkets like a "thank-you" charm tied on a satin ribbon, to practical things you can use - like personalized labels for water bottles. There are plenty of cute containers from which to choose, including little baskets, bags and boxes. If you are going with a basic bridal theme, check out the Bride's Gown decorated favor boxes, available in black and white and decorated with a black satin ribbon bow tie and crystal buttons. These little 2½-inch square boxes can be stuffed with mints, candied almonds or even acrylic rhinestone hearts, wedding bell confetti or acrylic "diamonds."

Want something a little more magical for your favors? You'll love a little Cinderella pumpkin coach-shaped favor box. Just 3½ inches tall, the carriage top opens, revealing space for your treats.

For a touch of something old and something new, check out the Vintage White Rose round box. It comes decorated with a white rose on top of a bed of lace and crystal drops. The box itself makes a nice memento, but feel free to add a treat!

Supplies

A nice way to decorate is by using the colors of the bridal party at the shower. Use the color of the bridesmaid's dresses on the tablecloths, napkins, plates or even a table runner. Or, go with the cute shower paper products that are available in a host of styles. "Wedding Wishes" luncheon napkins feature the bride, groom and bridal party. They are perfect for the shower, but could also be used for a couples shower or even a casual wedding reception. Another nice choice is the "Love, Honor, Cherish" beverage napkin. What a nice sentiment to share! There is even a matching plastic table cover that would be perfect for the punch bowl.

For a bridal shower, the "Blushing Bride" napkin is a nice, traditional choice. On the front of the blush pink napkin is a wedding cake decorated in hearts. On the back of the napkin, you'll find wedding bells. If you want to host a more traditional affair, consider purchasing a white or ivory damask table cloth and matching cloth napkins. They are pricier than paper products, of course, but then you will always have them for special occasions.

Food

There are ways to make the food you serve part of the decorations. Start with edible decals for the cake. This lets you make your cake at home, but decorate it as well as the bakery would! Serving cupcakes instead of a cake? Pick up a Wilton Cupcakes 'N More stand. Show off your individually decorated cupcakes on this silver-finished wire spiral stand. It holds 23 cupcakes and doubles as a table centerpiece.

Placecard Holders

There are plenty of options when it comes to placecard holders, starting with the basic, elegant gold or silver frame. The frame measures 3½ inches by 2½ inches - small enough to show off the name of the guest, but big enough to hold a small photograph afterward. If you want something more romantic, you will like the pewter "Double Heart" placecard holder. A clip coming out of the top heart holds the name card. Afterward, your guests can use it to hold a photograph or other treasure. Like the Cinderella theme? Placecard holders in the form of glass slippers or a pewter Cinderella coach are fun options.

If you're lucky enough to be hosting a bridal shower, there are plenty of decorations that can make your job easier. Start by setting your theme, picking your colors and sending off your invitations. You will be well on your way to a great event!
